Judaism: Orthodox or Religious Zionist?
My sister, Hana Forbes, writes in from Herzliya, responding to my comment in my earlier post, My Jewish Life, that she "became orthodox in college":
((((((
Over Shabbat I was thinking about what bothers me about calling me "Orthodox". I am only Orthodox in the sense that I am not-Conservative and not-Reform. I have a basic philosophical disagreement with them.
The problem with the term "Orthodox" - at least in my mind - is that it connotes the kind of Galut oriented "ArtScroll" type of Judaism. Its roots are in Samson Rephael Hirsch and and the חתם סופר (Chatam Sofer). I define myself as "Religious Zionist", which is philosophically and historically a totally different type of Judaism. Both are responses to modernity and both are committed to Jewish observance. Here the similarity ends.
Orthodoxy sees Judaism as religion only and puts Torah at the top of a pyramid of values. It is separatist and compartmentalizes life into Jewish and secular.
My type of religiously, Religious Zionism, is rooted more in Rav Kook, Soloveichik (Sp?), or in German 19th Century terms, Azriel Hildesheimer. It sees Jewish values as an equilateral triangle with each corner being עם ישראל, תורה, ארץ ישראל (the people of Israel, Torah, and the land of Israel). I live in the tension of balancing the claims of the respective values, though usually עם ישראל (the people of Israel) wins out.
Does what I've written make sense? If so, maybe you should put it in your blog.

I added in the Web links and translations in her text. (And yes, I know that putting it all between blobs of parentheses is lame, but I've spent the past two hours trying to figure out how to do blockquotes or make drupal notice the indentations that the plugged-in editor had created, or even to not get stuck when I go into raw HTML mode and ignore all changes that I had made since I first edited it in that mode, and my laptop battery is about to run out... which wouldn't be a problem, except Wifi was down at the only Internet cafe in the area and the power outlets here at the library are misdesigned and don't allow for the type of electric plug that this laptop has. Argh.)
