Tiferet Choir

The Tiferet Choir is looking for vocalists for a winter performance project. Vocal training is not needed, and you don't have to be able to read music. You do need to be disciplined, spontaneous, and a good listener, to have a good memory, and to be dedicated to Judaism, the arts, and community.

The project will create an as-yet-unnamed chamber opera, to be presented in the Cleveland Heights
area in January 2009. You will need to be available for weekly rehearsals, as well as for daily rehearsals in the week leading up to the performance.

The opera, a project of the Tiferet Artists Collective and directed by Jesse Freedman, will combine the voices of the choir with two visiting classically-trained opera singers and one or more instrumentalists.

The Choir is organized and led by composer/vocalist Joseph Zitt. Rather than performing conventional songs or choral works, it will use improvising game structures to create sonic landscapes and atmospheres, following the principles of Human Systems Composing as documented in his book "Surprise Me With Beauty: the Music of Human Systems". Musical influences include the work of Meredith Monk, Pauline Oliveros, Bobby McFerrin, and Cornelius Cardew.
